Could Dental Crowns Benefit Your Smile?

Dental crowns are the chosen treatment for preserving damaged teeth. Your Fayetteville, GA, dentist Dr. Jeffery Kendrick offers beautiful, realistic dental crowns that look just like the rest of your smile. So, could you benefit from getting a dental crown?

There are several situations in which our Fayetteville, GA, general dentist will recommend a dental crown. A crown could benefit your smile if you need to:

  • Strengthen a weak or damaged tooth
  • Improve the shape or size of a tooth
  • Protect a tooth from cracking or breaking
  • Hide a discolored or cosmetically flawed tooth
  • Improve the appearance of a tooth
  • Support and hold a dental bridge in place
  • Cover a dental implant

While dental crowns are most often associated with protecting and restoring a tooth that has been damaged or weakened by decay, trauma or an infection, they can also provide cosmetic benefits, as well. In some cases, a crown may even be used to close small spaces between teeth or correct minor tooth rotations or alignment issues.

How is a tooth prepared for a dental crown?

There are several steps involved in getting a dental crown. These steps include:

Step 1: Examination and Tooth Preparation - Our dentist will perform an oral exam and run X-rays to check the roots of the teeth and to make sure there are no problems with the tooth or the jawbone. If there is an infection within the tooth or if there is decay, these problems will need to be treated first and foremost.

Next, we will numb the area around the tooth. For the crown to properly fit over the tooth we will need to prepare the tooth to accommodate the crown. Once the tooth is prepared, we will create an impression of your tooth. These impressions are sent to a dental lab so they can create a crown that fits over the tooth. It can take a couple of weeks to get your permanent crown. In the meantime, we will place a temporary crown over the tooth to protect it.

Step 2: Get Your Permanent Crown - During this last visit, we will remove your temporary crown and then cement the new crown into place.
