Preparing For Surgery
Most wisdom tooth surgeries are outpatient procedures, meaning you are allowed to go home afterward. In most cases, you will need to arrange for someone to drive you home. If necessary, take any pre-surgery medications your dentist prescribed to you as instructed. Your dentist will let you know if you should avoid taking any of your regular medications.

You will probably be under general or sedation anesthesia during the surgery. Your dentist makes an incision in the gum to expose the tooth in question. After removing the bone around the tooth’s roots, the tooth is removed using forceps. Your dentist then cleans and, if necessary, stitches the surgical site. Gauze placed over the site helps control any bleeding and promotes healing.

After Surgery
After the surgery, you will most likely experience some pain, swelling and bleeding. This is normal, and you should follow your dentist’s instructions on how to deal with these issues. Take any prescription medication you receive after surgery as prescribed. Follow your dentist’s instructions on how and when to change the gauze covering the surgical site. Drink plenty of water after surgery and plan to take it easy for the next few days. Eat only soft foods like yogurt or applesauce for the first 24 hours after surgery. Avoid using tobacco for at least 72 hours after your procedure.
